The UPA has a shot at another five-year term. Incidentally, Rahul Gandhi had a big role to play in the Congress’s for going it alone in UP. Also, he was the star campaigner for the Congress, clocking the most miles and addressing most rallies. True, the Congress has benefited from the efforts of several other leaders and chief ministers.

At last count the UPA had got 261 seats and were headed to get nearly 262. The NDA meanwhile had got 156 and was slated to get more nearly 158. Third Front is at a distant third with less than 100 seats. The Fourth Front suffered the most startling defeat with all of its constituents suffering significant erosion in seat numbers.

The Congress sweep surprised foes and friends. It shocked the main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which had hoped to return to power after a five-year gap.

UPA wins India elections 2009. My wishes  for them. And I wish that they will fulfill all their promises made before elections.

Indian General Elections Results – 2009 To Elect New Prime Minister

india_elections_2009The world’s largest democracy  general elections 2009 have concluded on May 13, 2009. Now Its time for the results.

While there are 714 million eligible electorate at about 828,000 polling stations

The turnout was only about 59 to 60%. This is still a little higher than the previous elections. Political parties already started mudslinging to reach the magic figure of 270 and the two major  parties are unarguably the Indian National Congress which ruled the country for over 4 decades and the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Hindu nationalist party. There is also a third front with

communists and some socialist and regional parties vying for the big seat.it will be interesting to see which party/alliance will emerge the winner of elections in India. Based on several exit poll surveys it is clear that a clear majority of any party is a hard outcome and there is going to be a new trend unfolding in Indian politics.

Aishwarya Rai to promote third edition of the International Cinema Verite event

aishwarya-rai-international-tribunes-cinema-veriteAishwarya Rai, a regular at the Cannes Film Festival red carpet is going beyond her glitz and glamour tag. She is beginning to reinvent herself on the global scene as an activist for social and humanitarian causes.
The Bollywood diva will, alongside Queen Noor of Jordan, address a press conference on May 14 at Hotel Martinez here to announce the third edition of the International Tribunes Cinema Verite event that will take place in Geneva (Oct 6 to 8) and Paris (Oct 9-10) later this year.
Cinema Verite is a special film event dedicated to films and social actions that promote human rights and the eight Millennium Development Goals adopted by the United Nations.
The Cinema Verite event, hosted by the Cinema Verite Institute, has in past years seen the participation of Hollywood actors like Susan Sarandon, Meg Ryan, Ellen Birkin and Sharon Stone. Aishwarya will be the first non-Hollywood actress to lend her name to the cause.
Her husband, Abhishek Bachchan, who is here to attend the opening ceremony of the 62nd Cannes Film festival, will also be present at the press meet.
This year’s Cinema Verite event will include a special focus on India with the screening of Ram Gopal Varma’s Sarkar Raj. The 73-minute-film was shot over a period of two years and followed Vandana as she, among other things, supervised work on her organic farm at the foot of the Himalayas, took on American biotech giant Monsanto and fought alongside the Dalit villagers of Kerala to try and close down a Coca-Cola plant.
